Galway County Council issued the following notice on social media yesterday, 30th August. Coincidentally, this was the same day that the council planning office rejected plans for an enormous battery storage facility on the same road, less than a kilometre from the site of this incident.
“Following a road traffic incident on the N65, Killimor to Portumna Road approximately 2km south of Killimor, Galway County Council wishes to inform road users that lane restrictions will be in operation for the coming days….”
As we have submitted to the council and An Bord Pleanala, this road is not capable of dealing with dozens of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) every day for 2+ years of construction of a mammoth power plant. Included in this would be delivery of enormous loads comprising hundreds of tonnes which have to turn on/off the N65 causing major traffic hazards along the entire route from Kilmeen Cross to the proposed site north of Portumna.
This latest incident shows that nowhere along this stretch of road between Killimor and Portumna is a safe entry/exit point for a massive power plant. Anyone who has ever travelled this road will recognise this.
See the full notice below. We hope nobody was injured in the incident.
